    The History fo the Institute

    Spirited, practical, enthusiastic, independent, strong local church, diversified, Bible-centered, and Baptist," these are some of the many adjectives that describe Heritage Baptist Institute. H.B.I., as it is affectionately called, was started in 1975 under the direction and leadership of one of Ohio's great fundamentalists, Dr. Roy Thompson. Dr. Thompson's desire was to have a local church institute that was capable of training leaders for the work of the local church ministry. Our graduates are working in every phase of the ministry in-cluding the pastorate, missions (home and foreign), Sunday school, and as church secretaries.

    Doctrine Statement

    We believe in the verbal, plenary inspiration of the Old and New Testaments, the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the new birth in Christ alone, baptism by immersion for believers only, the eternal security of the believer, the Lord's Supper as a memorial, six literal twenty-four hour creation days, Christ's virgin birth, His sinless life, His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, Christ's bodily resurrection and bodily ascension into heaven where He now intercedes for believers, the pre-tribulation rapture of all believers, the millennial reign of the Lord Jesus Christ, the judgment, the reality of heaven and hell, the local church as God's institution to carry out the Great Commission, the obligation of every believer to live a holy life and witness to the lost of the saving power of Christ.

    Local church-oriented: Cleveland Baptist Church

    H.B.I. is a ministry under the authority of the local church. We believe it is through the local church that Christ gave the commission to evangelize the world.

    Those who preach in chapel services or teach classes, as well as students of the Institute, are required to actively serve God through a local, independent Baptist church.

    Because classes are held on Monday and Tuesday evenings, students may maintain full-time employment and stay active in their local church.

    Degrees

    One-Year Bible certificate

    This certificate is awarded to any individual who completes 32 credit hours.

    Graduate of Theology

    Awarded to men who complete the three-year program by taking all required classes and receiving 96 credit hours.

    Graduate of Christian Education

    Awarded to women who complete the three-year program by taking all required classes and receiving 96 credit hours.

    Bachelor of Religious Theology

    A four-year diploma option that men can receive by continuing their studies to complete required classes and earn a total of 128 credit hours.

    Bachelor of Christian Education

    A four-year diploma option that women can receive by continuing their studies to complete required classes and earn a total of 128 credit hours.

    Courses

    NEHEMIAH
    A verse by verse study of the book of Nehemiah and the dynamics of effective leadership.
    ACTS
    A verse by verse study dealing with the church from the time of Christ's ascension to its evangelistic explosion during the first half of the first century.
    REVELATION
    A study of these two books dealing with things to come. Daniel gives many answers to the end time, especially for Israel. Revelation is exactly what it says - a revelation of the last days, and a chronology of events to come.
    ROMANS
    A verse by verse study of Romans gives a thorough explanation of the doctrines of salvation, sanctification and service.
    PROVERBS
    A study of Proverbs dealing with the great truths found within this book of practical wisdom.
    PASTORAL EPISTLES
    A study of I and II Timothy and Titus. These books were written specifically to pastors of New Testament churches.
    GENESIS
    A verse by verse study of Genesis.
    CULTS
    A study of modern cults and their doctrines.
    ISAIAH
    A practical study of the historical setting of this book, emphasizing the personality and purpose of the prophet. Also an analytical study of the Messiah as portrayed by Isaiah.
    LIFE OF CHRIST I/II
    A study of the life of Jesus Christ, utilizing the Gospels. This gives the student a working knowledge of Christ's life and ministry.
    BIBLE MANNERS & CUSTOMS
    A survey of manners and customs of Bible times. It allows a proper interpretation of many "problem" texts and gives new insight into familiar portions of scripture. It includes a geographical survey of some of the more important Biblical sites.
    I & II PETER AND JUDE
    I Peter deals with the encouragement of believers in the midst of suffering and faithfulness to Christ. II Peter is to warn of false teachers and to remind them of certain important truths. Jude is much like II Peter, written to counter apostasy that was starting to take place.
    PSALMS
    A survey study of the Psalms with a detailed look of its application for Christians today.
    PAULINE EPISTLES
    A detailed study of Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians.
    CHAPEL
    Students are required to take notes of all chapel sessions and hand in notes at the end of each semester.
    JOSHUA
    An in-depth study of the book of Joshua with an emphasis on leadership.
    DEFENSE OF THE BIBLE
    A study in defense of the KJV 1611.
    MINOR PROPHETS
    A practical study of the books known as minor prophets.
    BIBLICAL CREATIONISM
    A study of creation from God's Word.
    I & II CORINTHIANS
    A study of the mental, moral and spiritual condition of the Corinthians.
    JOHN
    A study of the Son of God and His earthly ministry.
    BIBLICAL MISSIONS
    The study of New Testament missions and great missionaries.
    BIBLE DOCTRINE I/II/III/IV
    Study and learn the important Baptist doctrines of our faith.
    BAPTIST POLITY
    Study of the government and structure of the church.
    PASTORAL THEOLOGY
    The duties of the Pastor in the local church.
    HOMILETICS I/II
    The preparation and delivery of a sermon.
    PERSONAL EVANGELISM
    The methods of soul-winning, visitation and discipleship.
    CHURCH PLANTING
    MUSIC IN THE LOCAL CHURCH
    An in-depth look at God honoring music, its working in the local church and song leading.
    EFFECTIVE CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
    A study of how to properly and effectively education in any classroom situation.
    SPEECH
    A study of the preparation and delivery of certain types of speeches.
    METHODS OF TEACHING
    A study of the fundamentals of preparing lessons, course presentation to different age groups, and effective use of visual aids.
